A History of Great Yarmouth
Unlike most works on Yarmouth, this book looks at the entire area that has always been closely connected to the borough and that now makes up Greater Yarmouth, with a chapter on the history of Gorleston, and chapters on the villages and former villages to the north and south of the central area – and where the majority of the inhabitants of Greater Yarmouth now live. This book brings alive the history of Greater Yarmouth. It will be invaluable to the many people, whether residents or holiday visitors, who have ever wondered what it was like to live here in the past. Great Yarmouth dates its official ‘birthday’ from 1208, when it received its first royal charter, but people have lived in the area for many thousands of years. Its prosperity has rested for c....

Great Yarmouth - The Rows and the Old Town
This must be the most popular book on Great Yarmouth's history, and it should be on everyone's bookshelf. Although it is only a small book, with short descriptions and few pictures, it does provide an excellent foundation to further studies. It lists and names the 145 rows, referred to 'gridiron' by Charles Dickens, unique to Great Yarmouth since Medieval times up until the Second Sorld War. The rows, originally known by names which reflected the characters who lived there and the public houses adjoining them, they were home to the majority of the town's inhabitants, from rich merchants and tradesmen to the ordinary working classes. Numbers replaced names in the 19th century but the rows still formed the heart of the town. The photographs show what many of t....

Seaside entertainment began with the minstrels and pierrots, but by the 1920s their place had been taken by the concert parties. In the 1920s and 1930s stars such as Lillie Langtry, Mary Lloyd, Paul Robeson and Fred Karno appeared in the town. When the seaside resort reopened after the war the concert parties were being replaced by radio personalities and, by the mid 1950s, televi....
