Although this book's details are county wide, there are many references to Great Yarmouth's own murderers and shady characters. There are many hundreds of events listed within this book, and although the details are kept short, limited to a paragraph or two, they provide excellent information and are very enjoyable to read. Although it is only a small book, with short descriptions and few pictures, it does provide an excellent foundation to further studies. It lists and names the 145 rows, referred to 'gridiron' by Charles Dickens, unique to Great Yarmouth since Medieval times up until the Second Sorld War. The rows, originally known by names which reflected the characters who lived there and the public houses adjoining them, they were home to the majority of the town's inhabitants, from rich merchants and tradesmen to the ordinary working classes. The book follows the life of fisherman Billy, based on the author's father William Balls MBE. It starts off with Billy going to sea for the first time at the age of 14 and it follows him and the fishing industry before and after the Second World War. The first moving pictures were shown in the town in 1897 and quickly became part of every variety show; the first 'talkies' were screened in 1929 and the first Cinemascope in 1954.
