Singing the Fishing
Singing the Fishing was the third programme in a BBC series of Radio Ballads by Ewan MacColl, Charles Parker & Peggy Seeger. It features the men and women of the herring fishing fleets of East Anglia and Northeast Scotland. It was based on 250 tapes of conversation with fishermen and their families. One of the characters to be heard on the CD is Sam Larner, an eighty-year-old ex-herring-fisherman from Winterton, Norfolk. He had first gone to sea in 1892 on board a sailing lugger and, in the course of his working life, had seen the sailing fleet give way to steam-drifters.
